garyhiggins01 Quebecois improvisor Ellwood Epps affords the listener a fertile range of reimagined vocabularies for brass. On his new record cut a year ago in Montreal, 11 meditations for solo trumpet define a concise narrative of ideas. The set balances rich melodicism with a more austere vision of signaling—specifically, timbral properties revealed within long isolated notes. Epps is cerebral, but also swings like hell. In short, a cohesive, compelling statement from a protean imagination. Favorite track: Signal Change (for Cornel West).
